In 1997, a then unknown author named J.K. Rowling published her first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (aka Sorcerer’s Stone). Bloomsbury Publishing printed a scant 500 copies – 300 paperback copies were sent to libraries in the United Kingdom and 200 hardcover volumes were sold in bookstores.
“I was slightly caught in disbelief when I saw [a First Edition]. I receive a few calls every week from people saying they have a first edition Harry Potter, and it can be invariably ruled out in seconds.”— Jim Spencer, Hansons Auctioneers, England
Joanne Rowling first notes the idea of Harry Potter while delayed on a train traveling from Manchester to London King's Cross.
Over the next 2 years she finishes the manuscript and sends the first 3 chapters of Philosopher's Stone to a number of literary agents. One of those agents, Christopher Little, replied back "Thank you. We would be pleased to receive the balance of your manuscript."
After being rejected by several publishers, with many claiming the book's length would be unappealing to a younger audience, British publisher Bloomsbury Press accepts the book, giving Rowling a $4,000 advance.
On June 26th, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is published in the UK. Without knowing what the demand for the book will be, the first print run is just 500 hardcover books, with 300 copies going directly to libraries.
Penny Phillips, wife of Bloomsbury Publishing founder David Reynolds who made the decision to acquire the manuscript, inscribed #POTTER as a birthday present. The book is signed "to Alex/ wishing you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY/ with love from Penny/ 27.9.97".
Scholastic publishes a renamed "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone”. The first print run in the US produces 50,000 copies.
#POTTER is sold at auction in London and purchased by a private collector in the United States.
The Harry Potter Series passes 500M total copies sold and is officially the best selling book series of all time.
Rally enters into an agreement to acquire #POTTER from a private collector and offer it on the Rally platform
Rally’s #POTTER comes from the time before Harry, Hermione, and Ron were household names, and is one of the 200 First Edition hardcover copies, considered to be “the must have” for high-end rare book collectors. First Edition, First Issue hardcover copies have consistently commanded prices in the high five figures since 2016, and a sale at Sotheby’s last year exceeded $100,000.Invest Now
